Tracking Sharks
for conservation

Many sharks and rays are migratory species. By tagging animals we can learn about their behavior, their distribution, their population and important migration routes and areas.

From the elusive Angelshark to the common Smoothound:

Contribute to Regional Elasmobranch Tracking Data

Are you looking to optimize your research on sharks, rays, and skates in the Mediterranean? tshark is designed to support you with up-to-date data from a growing network of collaborators— all while ensuring the full ownership of one’s work.

What is
tshark?

tshark is a free online platform hosted by the University of Padova (UNIPD) that is possible because of contributions from researchers and fishers from around the Mediterranean. Thanks to the financial support of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection of Germany and in collaboration with WWF, the Angel Shark Project, Leibniz Institute for the Analysis of Biodiversity Change, iSea, and the Croatian Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, the platform has been relaunched in 2025 with a range of new functionalities, allowing the platform to be used for further tagging projects. Thanks to a periodically uploaded database, tshark boasts a public, interactive map that can be filtered to customize the viewing experience.

Why use
tshark?

Benefit from Collective Knowledge – Visualize the location of dozens of elasmobranch species caught by recreational and professional fishers from across the Mediterranean.

Increase Efficiency – Utilizing our simple and accessible digital tool will help streamline your work, without compromising scientific integrity; filter by area, fishing gear, species, and more to simplify data manipulation.

Ensure Intellectual Property – As per European data protection laws, keep your backend and personal data completely private while still contributing to our extensive public map of elasmobranch tracking in the Mediterranean.

Join our
Growing Network.

Many institutes and organisations have already joined efforts and are benefiting from our collaborative, data-driven platform. tshark was created with one goal in mind: uniting all the ongoing tracking efforts for better, more comprehensive research. Ensuring the long-term health of Mediterranean elasmobranch stocks, fishers’ livelihood, and biodiversity requires help – share your knowledge by uploading your datapoints on our platform and gain area-based insights across fisheries starting today.
